Things to know before visiting Thailand
- Visas & entry requirements: most nationalities, including the US, UK, and EU, can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days. Double-check your passport is valid for at least six months.
- Best time to visit: November to April offers the best weather, but visiting in the rainy season (May-October) can mean fewer crowds and lower prices.
- Local currency: Thailand’s currency is the Baht (THB). ATMs are widely available, but carry some cash, as street markets and smaller vendors rarely accept cards.
- Local customs & etiquette: Respect the monarchy, remove shoes before entering temples or homes, and avoid pointing your feet toward people or Buddha statues.
- Getting around Thailand: Grab taxis, tuk-tuks, or private drivers. For longer distances, internal flights or trains are comfortable options.
- Travel health tips: Tap water isn't drinkable—stick to bottled water. There are no mandatory vaccinations. Thailand is safe, but take normal precautions, especially in crowded tourist spots.

31-day couple trip to Thailand & Malaysia
“This is the second time we have used Insight Guides. Last year a trip to Madagascar was brilliant in all aspects so we decided to used them again for a long trip to Malaysia and Thailand totalling over 4 weeks door to door. I created a custom itinerary which after some weeks of planning with the RG team we had a game plan. It was a private tour so expensive as holidays go but the way the RG system works one gets the chance to work with 3 different agents from 3 different local companies and one can choose levels of hotel luxury. The only downside of this was 3 times the work to do the detailed planning, after receiving the 3 proposals I discarded 2 and concentrated on fine tuning the 3rd one, with the agent who I felt was listening to my needs The actual trip was amazing and everything worked pretty seamlessly even though we were looked after by 2 local companies, one in each country.”
