1. Tulum, Mexico

If it's secluded beaches you're after, look no further than Tulum. The crowds are thin and the coastline is divine; the perfect spot for a quiet getaway.

"Tulum is well known as the Mayan palace atop a cliff, looking out over the flawless Caribbean and pristine beach below," says Ellie Cusack, who lives in Mexico and pens the blog Tea and Tacos. "But it's not just for the day-trippers; don't overlook the miles of lush, beachfront eco-accommodation stretching out just down the road."

Take in Tulum's greatest ruins and beaches on Insight Guides' Mexico: Highlands and Coast holiday.

2. Drake Bay, Costa Rica

This Central American gem will get you with its wild, untamed beauty; think empty, golden beaches, surrounded by lush jungle. This is definitely off-the-beaten-path Costa Rica at its best. The Instagram pic below from mytanfeet says it all.

Want to see it for yourself? Insight Guides offers a range of trips to Costa Rica, including eco-adventures, volcano trekking, natural spas and more. Alternatively, tell our travel experts where you want to travel and we'll do the rest

3. Melbourne, Australia

It's easy to see why Melbourne is often touted as one of the world's most "liveable" cities. From its impressive skyline to buildings of a smaller size, this patch Down Under is a visual stunner, giving Victoria a vibrant splash of color. The city's famous painted beach huts of Brighton are another example of bright and lively Melbourne culture...

4. Krabi, Thailand

With a hot springs waterfall, wildlife sanctuary, and idyllic beaches, it's no wonder Krabi is such a wildly popular destination in Thailand. Rock climbers are definitely welcome; Krabi's limestone formations are perfect for an afternoon expedition.
