Braga and its monastery, the Annapurna Circuit, Nepal 19 Nov 2016
About this photo
The Annapurna Circuit is Nepal’s ‘classic’ trek. It is world famous – and rightly so – with varied and dramatic, but always beautiful, scenery. The route takes in lush valleys, picturesque rivers, an array of wildlife and, of course, some spectacular mountain peaks. The landscape is dazzling, but the cultural insight is also noteworthy, as you pass through Hindu, Buddhist and Tibetan areas.
Braga, 45 minutes from Manang, is a small Himalayan village. You can make out its characteristic monastery, which is one of the oldest in the region. Inside are hundreds of Buddha statues, and the view from the roof is a highlight. The monks venture to Kathmandu in October for teaching, and local villagers look after the monastery. If you come at this time, you’ll need to locate the key – which can take up to an hour and involves a lot of commotion while the key-holder is found.
If you feel like mountain biking around the region instead, try Insight Guides’ Annapurna Adventure trip, which also takes in Nepal’s vibrant capital, Kathmandu, as well as picturesque lakeside Pokhara.
